After the urging of several people, most importantly my wife, I finally decided to read The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis.
The book was rather slow for the first 11 chapters or so. I was getting discouraged and wondering (often out loud to Katie) how this could be one of Lewis’ better books. Nevertheless I pressed on. The last 25 pages or so it really did pick up. I am definitely glad I read (and finished) the book.
You don’t have to read Lewis to be a Christian. However, if you are a Christian there is no reason one shouldn’t read at least a few of his books. I think The Great Divorce is a wonderful allegory for a new believer to read. For me, I guess I was hoping for something that would punch me in the gut a little bit more. For this I will be rereading Chapter 3 of Spurgeon’s “Lectures to my Students.”
Out of 10, I give The Great Divorce a 6.
